We’ll start this post off with the recipe, then we can get into why hibiscus and why rose. Lets dive in!

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon dried hibiscus
  • 1 tablespoon dried rose
  • 1/2 tablespoon dried calundula
  • 1/4 cup sugar or salt, I opted for pink Himalayan salt (if you’re unsure, check out this page where I go a little more in depth here)
  • 2 tablespoons oil of choice (I used avocado, but if olive oil or coconut oil works well. I have another page where I go into more depth here)
  • Clean Jar

Method

Take your dried flowers and either put them in a food processor or into a pestle (a mortar and pestle will take longer, though it is fun. I recommend putting some salt or sugar into the pestle to help break down the petals).

Once blended, transfer to a bowl and add either your salt or your sugar. Once mixed, start with two tablespoons of your oil of choice. From there, you can choose to add more oil depending on how thick you want your body scrub.

After that, carefully pour the mixture into your jar and place in your bathroom. This yeids a small batch, just in case you try and decide you want to try out other combinations sooner rather than later. Happy Crafting!

Why hibiscus and rose?

With the rise in herbalism (which I love by the way!) popular ingredients like rose and hibiscus are becoming popular again. But why do we want to use these flowers (if we can, please don’t if you are allergic)?

Rose has been used for a millennia in skin care. From baths to oils, to waters to scrubs, rose has proven its worth with its anti-oxidant properties which make it great to use on irritated skin. The smell is a plus.

Hibiscus is similar to rose in that it also has anti-oxidant properties. Hibiscus is also great for acne prone skin or even just irritated and red skin as it is a natural exfoliant.

Thoughts

I’ve used this body scrub a few times and I must say, I really enjoy it! If you’re using salt you will have a more intense exfoliation, but I like that more than sugar. The smell is amazing! I feel like a little fairy while I am using it.

Welcome to selkiemothermakes, a space where people can learn when oils and herbs to use to make their own skin care.

While this is a fun page to learn how to make your own skincare, it is important to note that it is always best to err on the side of caution, especially when working with essential oils or other herbs that you may not have worked with before. Always test a small patch of skin before covering yourself in a product. If you take medications or have other allergies, it is your responsibility to cross check to see if a herb will have a higher chance of causing a reaction.
